OK, you’ve procrastinated long enough. I know spending the better part of the morning at the DMV can be a pain in the rear but it’s time to get your REAL ID.
Don’t know what a REAL ID is? A REAL ID is an enhanced form of driver’s license.
On October 1, 2020, every adult will need a REAL ID compliant driver’s license to fly in the U.S. REAL IDs have a star at the top of the card and they ensure the safety of air travel and the security of driver’s licenses in all 50 states.
To get a REAL ID, you will need to pay a visit to your state motor vehicle agency. Typically, you will need to bring proof of your social security number, date of birth and U.S. citizenship along with 2 other documents verifying your state residency. But check with your local motor vehicle agency in advance to make sure you have all the proper documents.
Beginning October 1, 2020, you will be required to show a REAL ID compliant driver’s license to pass through airline security checkpoints. If you do not have a REAL ID compliant license, you will not be allowed to proceed through the checkpoint unless you can cough up another acceptable form of identification like a passport, a passport card or other type of government ID.
But if I were you, I would just get the REAL ID. No one wants to dig out their passport just to go visit Aunt Martha in Topeka, Kansas.
